Thomas Boughey Kindergarten is delighted to share the news that it was awarded Stoke-on-Trent’s SHINE Award in July 2026.

About the SHINE Award Project

The SHINE award project came about as the EYIS data showed a rapidly increasing number of children with additional needs and the data also highlighted that many more nurseries were identifying and supporting children with additional needs. The project started with an initial pilot involving 4 local nurseries who worked with the EYIS team, parents and other multi-agency professionals to decide the criteria and processes to support the awards. It was agreed that the award would not involve additional work for settings but would be based on evidence of excellent inclusive practice.

Aims of the SHINE award

There are two main aims:

• Recognising and celebrating providers that demonstrate excellent inclusive practice in supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEND) and their families.
• SHINE will also aim to raise the profile of award winners with families looking for inclusive settings.

Award Information

• Any provider in Stoke-on-Trent can apply for the award. (Rated as Good or Outstanding by OFSTED).
• The settings must achieve all of the set criteria in order to achieve the award.
• The settings will be assessed by a member of the EYILS service.
• Settings who achieve the award will be presented with a certificate and be able to display the SHINE logo on their nursery paperwork and social media pages. They will also benefit from access to bespoke training in their setting, be invited to be members of the Early Years Forum and have access to adapted paperwork to recognise their proven excellent practice.
• The award will last for two years and nurseries will have to reapply for further accreditation.
